1:5:10:040 Tip: According to the EPA air infiltration is responsible for 25 to 40% of our heating and air conditioning bill. Air infiltration can waste much more energy than missing insulation. Severe leaks can be felt as drafts, but a Wizard Stick is much more sensitive. Place a puff of the smoke near an electrical outlet sharing an exterior wall. If the smoke blows away from the outlet you have infiltration of air from the outside. If the smoke goes into the outlet then air is flowing out. Flow in either direction may present issues. Not only can this waste energy, but also provides a pathway for dusts, insulation and other unwanted particles to enter the home or moisture to enter the walls.

Sealing infiltration pathways not only lowers your energy bill but helps improve indoor air quality.

Over the next several days I will talk about correcting air infiltration.
