:184 UV & Ozone

Welcome to today’s 1:5:10:365 Tip for becoming a better steward for our home and planet environment.

1:5:10:184 EcoTip: Portable air cleaners with ultra-violet lights (UV) may produce ozone (See yesterdays 1:5:10:365 EcoTip for information on the problems with ozone). Exposure to the light can cause damage to the skin and eyes.

Ultra-violet light is sometimes touted for portable air cleaners to help kill bacteria and mold. While it may be effective in the lab or hospitals, it has been my experience that it generally not effective or necessary for residential air cleaners and adds a lot to the cost of the unit. Air flow past the UV is generally too fast to permit a “kill” and the UV can’t penetrate deeply enough into the filters to keep organisms from growing if they get wet.

My recommendation is to save your money and stick to HEPA filtration and activated carbon and keep the filters dry.
