:306 Smoke Detector Batteries

Take the 1:5:10:365 challenge: Do one thing – for 5 to 10 minutes – 365 days a year to make our home and planet environment better.

1:5:10:306 EcoTip: Check and clean your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. This is also a good time to change the batteries. Tonight is the daylight-savings-time change. Winter is on the way so it is important to service our detector units yearly -especially before the season when the risks of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning go up. As long as your having to remember to change the clocks –  might as well use this day as a yearly reminder to get the various detectors up to snuff.

Welcome to today’s 1:5:10:365 Tip for becoming a better steward for our home and planet environment.

1:5:10:214 EcoTip: Leak alarms work like a smoke detector for water. Place them in areas that may get wet but not be quickly discovered. If a leak develops the alarm alerts you so action can be taken to help limit expensive damage.

Suggested Review – none

1:5:10:063 Tip: There are two types of smoke detectors that are commonly used. Ionization smoke detectors contain a radioactive waste product from nuclear power generation. The radioactive material is shielded, but presents a disposal problem. Photoelectric smoke detectors don’t have radioactive material and studies have shown they are more reliable, especially in smokey fires.

Here’s a good article in Mother Earth News that discusses the advantages and disadvantages.

1:5:10:062 Tip: Studies have shown more than 2 out of every 5 children will sleep though the noise made by a standard type smoke detector. They are much more likley to waken to the sound of a familiar voice, like their parent, yelling their name. The Kid Smart Vocal Smoke Detector solves this problem – and its photoelectric!

Tomorrow I will discuss the advantages of photoelectric smoke detectors.
