:331 Mulch Trees & Shrubs

Take the 1:5:10:365 challenge: Do one thing – for 5 to 10 minutes – 365 days a year to make our home and planet environment better.

1:5:10:331 EcoTip: Adding home-made mulch around your trees and shrubs and to your garden is a good way to reduce your contribution to the landfill while adding nutrients to the soil and helping to insulate the roots from winter damage from the cold.

Instead of raking up leaves I run the lawn mower over the leaf covered yard. This picks up the leaves and chews them to bits at the same time   – making mulch. Then I can add the mulch back where I please.

In our community – we put our yard wastes out separately for curbside pick-up. The trimmings are turned into compost and are available free for members of the community to use as mulch. If you don’t have enough mulch from your yard to satisfy your needs – check to see if your community has a similar program.

Welcome to today’s 1:5:10:365 Tip for becoming a better steward for our home and planet environment.

1:5:10:295 EcoTip: Autumn is here and leaves are starting to fall. Make sure you clear your gutters on a regular basis so they are ready for rain. Clogged gutters will overflow and can lead to saturation of the foundation, and water backing up under the roof into the eaves and possibly into wall cavities.

 Additional Information:

Gutter shields are available that will help keep leaves out of the gutter, but the leaves can still block the gutter shield. If you are using gutter shields make sure to keep them clear as well.

Welcome to today’s 1:5:10:365 Tip for becoming a better steward for our home and planet.

1:5:10:082 Tip: Even if you mulch mow, you will probably have some form of yard wastes that should go in the compost pile. Many communities have yard waste recycling programs that turn grass clippings, leaves, and other organic materials from your yard into composted mulch – which is frequently available to residents at low or no cost.

Additional Information

Turning your own yard wastes into compost is the best for the environment, but a quick reality check is that most people will never make their own compost. For this reason community yard waste recycling programs are going to be best for the environment.
