:198 Ozone Water Purification

Welcome to today’s 1:5:10:365 Tip for becoming a better steward for our home and planet environment.

1:5:10:198 EcoTip: Ozone has some uses for killing bacteria as a part of water purification. This method has become popular for spas and swimming pools permitting a reduced amount of chlorine to be used. When used for drinking water purification, it should be combined with other types of filtration and purification to address contaminants that ozone doesn’t reduce.

Ozone has been used for helping to achieve low bacteria levels in spas, hot tubs, wells, pools and water purification units. One way of generating ozone uses UV light which was discussed yesterday in :197.

:183 Avoid Ozone Purification

Welcome to today’s 1:5:10:365 Tip for becoming a better steward for our home and planet environment.

1:5:10:183 EcoTip: Air Purification units that emit ozone can be problematic. Before purchasing an ozone type purifier – Do your research!

 Additional Information:

Before investing in an ozone purification system, please spend the time reviewing what the EPA says about ozone purification. I have found it to be factual and consistent with my opinions:

There is a large body of written material on ozone and the use of ozone indoors. However, much of this material makes claims or draws conclusions without substantiation and sound science. In developing Ozone Generators that are Sold as Air Cleaners, the EPA reviewed a wide assortment of this literature, including information provided by a leading manufacturer of ozone generating devices. In keeping with EPA’s policy of insuring that the information it provides is based on sound science, only peer reviewed, scientifically supported findings and conclusions were relied upon in developing this document.

Several brands of ozone generators have EPA establishment number on their packaging.  This number helps EPA identify the specific facility that produces the product.  THE DISPLAY OF THIS NUMBER DOES NOT IMPLY EPA ENDORSEMENT OR SUGGEST IN ANY WAY THAT EPA HAS FOUND THE PRODUCT TO BE EITHER SAFE OR EFFECTIVE.

You can read more about the EPA’s evaluation at: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/ozonegen.html

Welcome to today’s 1:5:10 Tip for becoming a better steward for our home and planet.

1:5:10:056 Tip: Refrigerators have a number of components that shouldn’t be disposed at a regular landfill and in fact should be recycled by an authorized “appliance deconstructor”. Yep that’s the official term for companies that recycle these types of things. After hurricane Katrina over 390,000 large appliances like refrigerators were inspected and deconstructed. Some of the materials that must be collected for recycling or hazardous waste disposal include:

Mercury switches,

Mercury thermocouples,

Fluorescent tubes

• Freon refrigerant

• PCB containing capacitors

• PCB containing ballasts

So don’t just abandon those old appliances. Most companies that sell and install new appliances will take the old one off your hands and be sure it is handled properly – but make sure you ask.

Additional Information: You can check for recycling and freon capture options by checking with your appliance supplier, local sanitation company or by checking on-line at www.earth911.org and entering the item you want to recycle and your zip code.
